There really is no telltale sign that would reveal which filler was used just by looking. I think it is likely that one of the hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvederm or Restylane) was used. Regardless, this smooth, natural appearance can be achieved with one of these hyaluronic acid fillers, either of which would be my choice of filler for the lips. It is important that you find a physician with good technique that you are comfortable with and who will walk you through the after-care and expected post-injection course.

    Fat Injection - Fat transfer is a very natural and great operative technique. When getting a surgical facial rejuvenation (facelift, eyelid lift etc.), this can easily be done at the same time. Fat can cause swelling for a bit longer than hyaluronic acids. In general, about 50-70% of the fat volume lives and becomes a part of your body.
    Surgical Lifts - Many times the lips can be lifted directly, either with an incision near the nose, inside the lips, or right on the upper lip border.
    Alloderm - an engineered skin/soft tissue substite that can be rolled and inserted into the lips. Although, with the above options, the role for this has diminished

I have had many years of experience with all of the different fillers. When comparing Juvederm and Restylane - Juvederm lasts much longer in most parts of the face. In the lips, neither lasts very long.

Keep in mind that results vary from patient to patient, but usually I see:

Juvederm - 6-10 months

Restylane - 5-7 months

Both last 3-5 months in the lips

It is very hard to come up with a generic answer for how long Juvederm lasts because many factors affect the duration of response. A skillful injector will inject Juvederm in the correct layer and use the correct amount to give you the result you desire.

If all those criteria have been met, then Juvederm can last an average of 6 months in the lips and nasolabial folds and upto a year in the tear troughs under the eyes. However, I have had patients who I have injected Juvederm in their lips (same doctor, same patient, same lip :), and I have gotten variable response times.

During the first 1-2 days the swelling from juvederm is noticeable and is almost always uneven. One side always swells more than the other and it could change the next day.
